THIS AUCTION IS FOR 100+ YEAR OLD ITALIAN SILVERPLATE SET OF EIGHTALL DIFFERENT MONTAGNANI FIGURAL DEMITASSE SPOONS The Montagnani Italian factory started in 1871 by a man named Giovanni Montagnani. Italian souvenir spoons were made in brass, pewter, silver plate, gold plate, and sterling silver. Not every handle design was made with sterling and not every handle design used all the figural designs. Not all spoons were marked Italy. Probably no one handle design used all the various figures. Montagnani was probably the most productive maker of these spoons but there were other makers. Montagnani spoons that are not marked were made from 1871 to 1891, those crafted after 1891 to 1918, when the factory was closed, due to WWI, were stamped "ITALY" on the bottom of the bowl. 1. Some folks mistakenly call these "Ferrari Spoons" due to the prancing horse figure spoon, similar to the logo of the great auto manufacturer FERRARI. The spoons are in excellent shape, showcasing the master craftsmanship of their makers. Each spoon carries the 1891 - 1918 "ITALY" mark on the bottom of each bowl. Demitasse: A demitasse is a small cup used to serve Turkish coffee or espresso. Typically, they are made of ceramic, pottery or porcelain and accompanied by matching saucers. Demitasse spoons are only about three to five inches in length. Originating in 1800s France, these diminutive silver spoons were created to accompany a demitasse cup, which was a small cup for drinking black coffee after a meal. The demitasse spoon would be served alongside the cup, and it would be used to mix sugar into the coffee. Condition: These spoons were found in an attic after being stored for unknown years, probably pre-WW-II. Great grandparents emigrated from Italy to USA after WW-I. They are in very good condition, minimum wear.
