TRUMAN Truman was returning from the Potsdam Conference while onboard the USS Augusta in the mid-Atlantic and he had Byrnes assist him with writing the famous speech. In his Memoirs: Year of Decisions (Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Co., 1955), Truman wrote, “The final decision of where and when to use the atomic bomb was up to me. Let there be no mistake about it. I regarded the bomb as a military weapon and never had any doubt that it should be used.” Items signed by Truman that mention the atomic bomb are exceedingly rare and highly desirable. A letter signed by Truman stating that, “the dropping of those bombs is what ended the war,” sold for $28,750 at Sotheby’s in December 1995.
