Volume Bragg grating elements that transform high-power laser diodes or diode bars into narrowband emitters have been designed by PD-LD Inc. of Pennington, N.J. The LuxxMaster VBG technology locks and narrows the diodes' emission to a precisely defined center wavelength and reduces sensitivity to changes in temperature.The elements narrow linewidth by a factor of ~10, and both improve control of the center wavelength and reduce the temperature drift by a factor of ~30. In the company's comparison of commercial diodes with and without the VBG, the respective figures for these spectral characteristics were: linewidth, <0.3 nm and 3 to 6 nm; center wavelength control, ±0.1 and ±3 nm; and temperature drift, 0.01 and 0.3 nm/°C.
