Description: Cast into the top of the base of this iron mechanical pencil sharpener is the following: "Gould & Cook, Leominster, Mass., Pat. May 23, 86." It is known as the "Gem" pencil sharpener. The Gem was produced from the late 19th century into the early 20th century. It stands 7 5/8 inches tall and weighs 5 pounds 3 ounces. The rotating disk has a round piece of sandpaper against which the pencil is pressed while revolving the disk at the same time to make a sharp point. The disk and the pencil both rotate at the same time. The base has 2 holes to use for screws to attach the pencil sharpener to a solid surface. The piece of sandpaper that is on the disk is new. Rotating the disk with the pencil in place is difficult and it is hard to push the pencil into position. It needs some tweaking to get it into perfect smooth working condition. I am not the person to do that as I feel sure I would end up not being able to get it back together correctly if I took any of it apart. I did go over it with q-tips to remove much dust and grease but the next owner may want to spend more time on that. Or not. It is quite presentable as it is.
