Book 2, Page 194 Reference Book Identification: The 2 Bibles of Salt Shakers Collecting are "The World of Salt Shakers" Antique & Art Glass by Mildred & Ralph Lechner, Volume 2 and 3. If you have these books you can follow along with ones I have identified. A 3rd book, Glass Salt Shakers: 1,000 Patterns by Arthur G Peterson is also informative but no color pictures FYI about Art Glass Salt Shakers.... While I will describe any damage like chips, cracks or hairlines, I will not list out every factory imperfection such as striation glass or stress lines air bubbles, impurities, etc. as these were utilitarian items and quality control wasn't a priority with the tops. The jagged tops you always/often find are a result of these being "mold blown" and the shaker is busted off the pontil rod leaving a jagged edge. A lid was placed on top so I guess the factories didn't see a reason to grind down & polish the top rims. Although sometimes they did, especially later in time. There are some exceptions to this rule of thumb with higher end glass companies. Most of these shakers are circa 1870s to early 1900s. Later on salt shakers became pressed molded and the rims are smooth. Lids are NOT that important when collecting these shakers unless they are original. So don't be surprised to find different lids on the same shaker or bad condition lids. The collection is all about the shakers!
