Description: This is a Rare Original Antique Photograph of a Group of Soldiers or Training Militia, from the Post Civil War Era, posing in front of an American Flag. The solders are all in Uniform, and have the initials “SJI” on their collars, or on their Cap badges. Most of the soldiers appear to be quite young, with hat badges that have a wreath around the SJI letters. The older man in the center has hat badge with the SJI letters in between the image of crossed rifles, and he also has a few medals on his chest. 4 of the solders can be seen with an iconic Civil War era belt buckle of an American Eagle, with wings spread, and surround on the lower part with a wreath. The 3 seated soldiers are holding Swords, and the soldiers on either side are standing next to a tripod display of standing rifles. Its unclear how many stars are on the Flag behind them, as it is draped oddly in the stars corner. The photo measures 7 ¾” tall x 9 ¾” wide, and is on paper that is mounted partially to a cabinet card style backing. The backing card appears to have been cut down along its edges, and I can’t tell if the photo itself was cut down. The photo does have some curling & roughness along the top & bottom edges, and is peeling away from the backing along the top & bottom edges. Even so, I thought it was of enough Historical significance to offer on ebay!! I am stymied though as to the meaning of the “SJI” initials.
