Pristine.At only age 10, Méndez - along with his family - had been drafted into Pancho Villa’s rebel army during the Mexican Revolution. Young Rafael soon became Villa’s favorite player, accompanying the general during a particularly active and brutal period - being chased by the US Army on President Hoover’s orders. After his family was released from service, young Rafael was requested by the general to remain at his side. Eventually, however, Méndez was released from Pancho Villa’s service. After a stint in the Mexican army, Méndez moved to the United States where he settled in the midwest. He worked at several different industrial jobs but he longed to play trumpet. After a few years of touring and playing theaters, he moved his family to California and went to work for the MGM orchestra. Méndez performed on many movie soundtracks and performed live with the orchestra, catching the attention of Decca records, who offered him a remarkable twelve record contract!Méndez was, by now, a well-known soloist and artist, and entered into an endorsement deal with F.E. Olds & Sons. Tales of the development of the Méndez model trumpet vary, but they made for him a prototype trumpet he liked and played on many of his albums. The production model was introduced in 1952, and Méndez played the eponymous trumpet throughout the rest of his career. The Méndez model was very popular and always generates a great deal of nostalgia whenever the subject is brought up.The trumpet in this listing is a late period Olds Méndez Model, dating to about 1978. It was purchased during the final days of a local music shop, but sat in storage for decades.The seller is local player and collector, and he told me how he had come into possession of it via some horse trading. Some years ago he had taken it to his teacher to look at. They reportedly took it out of the bag and each played about a dozen notes on it, then they carefully put it away - until now!I am happy to answer any questions or provide more pictures.
