Product Description: This offering is for one set of new-old-stock Suntour XCD brake/shifter levers (Model CL-XD00) from the late 80's. We've settled on this model designation after reviewing our late 80's and early 90's shop catalogs. So as many folks understand, this offering represents good Suntour quality in brake/shifter levers from the late 80's and likely intended for non competitive mountain bike applications. Although they should mount and function fine on any number of other bikes with straight or riser bars. Regarding the brake levers, let me highlight some specifications that folks may find helpful. The lever dimensions (in terms of length x width using the longest and widest reference points possible) are 18 cm long x 9.5 cm wide (where the width includes the entire mounting bracket and extends to the front edge of the lever). As one would expect, the bar clamp is designed to mount onto standard riser/straight bars with a 22.2 mm tube diameter. I also weighed the levers and they come in at 476 grams (with shifters, but without the shifter cables/housing) and 548 grams (with shifters and related cables and housing...although, please note there are no brake cables/housing included with this offering). Finally, Suntour was making both canti-lever and roller-cam brakes for their mountain bikes during this era, so either would appear to be a good match for these brake levers. It's our understanding these levers were designed with short cable pull specifications, which means they should also function okay when connected to traditional road caliper brakes (if there was a project out there that called for this setup). Although, not all direct cable pull calipers would be compatible, as newer model V-brakes require a long cable pull brake lever design (so these levers would not be a good fit for V-brakes). Some additional specification include the following... Index shifting compatibility: 6-speed (with Suntour branded or compatible freewheel/cassette...although avoid ultra/narrow 6-speed freewheels, as sprocket spacing is too close) Friction shifting compatibility: Several options (most 5/6/7 speed freewheels/cassettes) Mounting bracket/spacers: Clamp-on model (for straight or riser bars with 22.2 mm bar tubing) Weight: See above (combined weight provided in preceding paragraph) Other notes: As alluded to above, these dual control shifter / brake lever sets are intended to function best on 3 x 6-speed mountain bike drivetrains with brake levers that allow for short cable pull (so will function best with traditional cantilever, roller-cam and even road caliper brakes). These brake levers are not a good match for long cable pull setups (like V-brakes and mechanical / cable activated disc brakes). As for condition, all the sets we have are new and in their original retail packaging (Suntour branded cardboard box). The black finish still shows as new. There are probably going to be some light marks/scratches from years of storage, but these combo levers are individually wrapped in separate plastic bags and the factory matched shifter cables/housing are included (so each lever has been fairly well packaged/preserved over the years). Please note (and as alluded to above) brake cables/housing were not included with these combo levers...just the shifter cables/housing. Additionally, there is no labeling on the black housing, but it's identical in every respect to other Suntour index shifter cable housing I have (that is "Accushift" labeled). So I am confident the shifter cables/housing is authentic Suntour quality as well. Brief discussion concerning Suntour labeling in the late 80's and early 90's... For those that are interested, the pecking order of Suntour mountain bike groupsets with indexing capable drivetrains is somewhat confusing...due primarily to the various model number/name changes over a relatively short time period (from the late 80's to the early 90's...so the final years of the original Suntour company headquartered in Japan). To the best of my knowledge, there were anywhere from four to eight indexing capable mountain bike groupsets from the late 80's and into the early 90's...and these XCD components were middle of the pack (and one step below Suntour's competition-level groupsets).
