Born Diocles into an ordinary family in the Roman province of Dalmatia, he ascended the military ranks, eventually becoming a cavalry commander under Emperor Carus. Upon the deaths of Carus and his son Numerian during a campaign in Persia, Diocles, now known as Diocletianus, was proclaimed emperor by the troops. Despite a rival claim from Carus's surviving son, Carinus, Diocletian emerged victorious in the Battle of the Margus.Diocletian's reign brought stability to the empire, effectively bringing an end to the Crisis of the Third Century. In 286, he appointed his fellow officer Maximian as Augustus, sharing the title of co-emperor. Diocletian ruled over the Eastern Empire, while Maximian governed the Western Empire.
