It was initially a scholarly journal sent to 165 charter members and nowadays it reaches the hands of 40 million people each month. During its earlier years the magazine was a text-oriented publication. However, starting with its January 1905 full-page pictures of Tibet in 1900-01 its focus changed to featuring extensive photographic and pictorial content – that for which it was to become famous. Some of the magazines contained within this particular collection are extremely hard-to-find and will provide a wonderful virtual library of reference material with articles covering geography, science, nature, current affairs, architecture, world cultures, history, anthropology and much more.
