A solicitation is a paper item--typically 8.5x11", one or more pages--that provides detail on an upcoming record company release. Information in a solicitation can include both details on the release and on the planned marketing campaign. Only a small number of solicitations were typically printed up, and they would be shared with industry people who needed to be informed about upcoming releases. These were never released to the public. Only a few record companies regularly printed up solicitations. Columbia/Epic is the best known example. Sometimes, a solicitation would be printed far in advance of a release, and they can contain details/artwork that was changed before release. Very few solicitations survive. They were not printed in large quantities, and most were tossed soon after a release came out.
