Description: Beautiful, colorful miniature retablo Nativity set or creche hand-made and hand-painted in Peru. The retablo consists of a small clay Nativity set or creche containing hand-painted clay figures of the Infant Jesus, Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, the three wise men/kings (or perhaps shepherds), an ox, and a donkey. The retablo has a handle for ornament hooks and/or string on the back and is decorated with a hand-painted floral design. The retablo measures approximately 2 1/2” wide, 2 3/8" high, and 1 3/8" deep. The age of the retablo is unknown. Estate sale find. A beautiful and inspirational piece of Latin American Catholic folk art! The miniature retablo appears to be in very good to excellent used condition with signs of wear and age, such as some yellowing of a lacquer coating on the back, spots, stray marks, perhaps some scratches, scrapes, nicks, and abrasions (especially on the lower left side on the back), and some cracks around the base of the handle on the back of the creche and on some of the flower petal crevices (it’s possible these cracks might be due to the molding and shaping process of the retablo since it looks like lacquer covers them; please see photos).
