Description: On offer is a large Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells archive. From the collection of late great David Laing music journalist and author of, among others: ‘The Faber Companion to 20th Century Popular Music’, ‘The Guerrilla Guide to the Music Business, and, ‘Continuum Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World’. He also wrote widely for music magazines and newspapers, including The Guardian. Laing also produced a documentary on Mike Oldfield for the BBC. One of the highlights of the archive is a handwritten ‘analysis’ of both Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge by the composer, David Bedford. The analysis was written for the arrangement of ‘The Orchestral Tubular Bells’ an album released in 1975 by Virgin which reached No. 17 in the charts. Bedford’s analysis and arrangement were also used for ‘Mike Oldfield and Friends Live from Queen Elisabeth Hall June 25th, 1973’. The ‘Analysis’ was written for Karl Dallas (writer and folk singer’). Dallas wrote an article for the Sunday Times which is featured in the archive and contains the analysis. On the handwritten analysis, Bedford has written ‘For K. D’. The ‘analysis’ is a fascinating read and was almost certainly written with the help of Mike Oldfield. The Orchestral Tubular Bells was a version of Mike Oldfield's album Tubular Bells, arranged by David Bedford and recorded in 1974 by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring Oldfield himself playing the guitar. Excerpts from the album were featured in the 1979 NASA film, The Space Movie. There is also a press photograph of the band practicing in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, it was later used for the front cover of the album. It has been ripped and has a tape repair running through it. Kind of charming. Laing seems to have bought the interviews from Dallas. There is an invoice from Dallas and a note from ‘Cindy’ dated 1975 which reads ‘if you ever run the ‘Fred Houston’piece on Mike Oldfield, it is really written by Karl Dallas, but he’s on the contract to somebody or rather and can’t write under his real name’. The following is an extract from a Fred Houston / Karl Dallas article: ‘it was on the eve of the big one. David Bedford was spending Sunday at home with his family, after taking to 90 piece Royal Philharmonic Orchestra three days of rehearsals of his complex symphonic arrangements of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells’ and the ‘Hergest Ridge’ and the Royal Albert Hall was putting out SRI signs for the concert the next day’. There is also a copy of ‘The Making of Tubular Bells’ by Richard Newman. It is signed and dedicated by Newman to David Laing. Newman has written: ‘ to Dave, with my best wishes and thanks for all the support over the years, Richard Newman’. The archive is made up of handwritten or hand-typed annotated interviews and analyses. There is also a lot of photocopied material collected by Laing. This archive dates from long before the internet. It is a fascinating archive that needs a Mike Oldfield fan to research properly!
