Description: Rare Mid-Century Modern Original Serigraph Print of Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, California, Signed De-Jay or De-Say, Circa 1950's This rare original hand-pulled serigraph print has a dynamic design with brilliant colors suggestive of the refraction of a colorful sunset approaching through an fog bank at Fisherman’s Wharf on San Francisco Bay. The four-color print required a separate screen for each color, with two different reds creating the sky and atmospheric conditions. The Golden Gate Bridge appears in the background as an apparition as the fog marches in. This print medium-large (20" wide x 16" high) is under glass (note reflections in photos) and in excellent condition. The stylized script of the "in the plate" signature at the lower right is difficult to decipher as DeJay or DeSay, and online searches did no reveal either name as a known artist, suggesting use of a pseudonym. The artist was clearly an academically trained artist and print maker, as the print is well designed and skillfully printed. The hardwood gilded framing is very high quality, and the original backing was stamped "Mission Hand Prints, 1702 Berkeley Street, Santa Monica, California"; this label was conserved when the original backing was replaced with acid-free paper. The style is influenced by cubism and reminds me of the famous modernist and cubist-inspired American painter, Stuart Davis (1892-1964). This exceptional original serigraph would fit well in a Mid-Century environment as well as other Modern settings. Condition: Serigraph Print: Excellent clean condition with no tears, fading or restoration. Vintage Gold with Red Highlights Frame: Very good with a few minor chips in the gold finish primarily at the corners of outside edges.
