MERCATOR “SS AMERIKA” (M413) 1:1250 SCALE METAL MODEL PASSENGER LINER

Description: Launched April 20, 1905 SS Amerika was built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Ireland for Hamburg America Line. Her maiden voyage began October 11, 1905 sailing to New York City. She was one of the most luxurious passenger liners for transatlantic service of her time. Her sister ship was Kaiserin Auguste Victoria. In order to avoid capture by the Royal Navy when World War I broke out, Amerika remained at port in Boston rather than sailing home. Then on April 6, 1917, anticipating Congress would declare war on Germany, Amerika was seized by the Collector of Customs for the Port of Boston. On July 25,1917 Amerika was commissioned for service in the Cruiser and Transport Force by the United States Navy. Renamed America, she began her new career as a troop ship sailing to France on October 31, 1917. In the early hours of October 15, 1918, without warning, America sank. There was not a conclusive answer as to why she sank. One theory was that after the ports had been left open to clear the air of the smell of disinfectants that had been used to cleanse the compartments of the Spanish Flu, water entered through open ports on G Deck. Another theory was that the ship had been resting in the mud on the bottom, and that, with the rising of the tide one side was released before the other side causing it to list, take on water and sink. America was raised and refloated on November 21, 1918. On December 16,1918, she was towed to the New York Navy Yard where she underwent repairs until February 1919. After the war, America was reconditioned and returned to passenger service until 1932.In 1940 America was acquired by the US Army for use as a floating barracks and renamed USAT Edmund B. Alexander. In May 1949 she was placed in reserve and in 1951 she was laid up in the Hudson River. America was sold to the Bethlehem Steel Company and scrapped January 16,1957. ATTENTION: SS Amerika was made by fine German model makers Mercator. She is in good condition, but ship models may require some attention or minor repairs upon arrival. Masts for this model are very fragile, and may need to be adjusted prior to display. Condition is Used. Ships USPS FREE
