Description: On offer is a pair or midcentury Danish modern coffee tables by the W.H. Gunlocke Chair Company, textbook examples of the simple genius, dexterity, and practical beauty of Mid-Century Modern at its best, made when old-world materials (no plywood, cardboard, or plastics here) and cabinet-making techniques were being employed to create furniture that would last for generations, not a few years (or semesters). These feature walnut construction with elevated square tops surmounting bases with straight squared legs and H-stretchers that demonstrate the master craftsmanship of this Wayland, New York cabinetmaker and case goods manufacturer. I attempted to capture some of the wonderful geometric light-and-shadow play that happens when the pieces are in focused light, but it is rather hard to do. Anyone familiar with the regulating line will understand the value of having the bases of these lit as well as the tops and sides. They're genius little tables, as in addition to being beautiful, those slender little legs are deceptively strong--you can pile as many oversize architecture and design coffee table books as you can fit on these with little fear of the tables failing you in any way. These are ideal for a Mad Men-inspired office space, or anywhere a practical, masculine, clean-lined pair of tables might be welcome. Though I understand there were several pieces of Gunlocke on Mad Men, these do not appear to the best of my knowledge, which I consider to their advantage (so many Eames, Le Corbusier, etc. MCM pieces are so frequently on display as trophy pieces that they have begun to look trite and common from over-exposure). Pieces such as this, originally designed and sold as office furnishings, require examination for what they are, not who designed or manufactured them. They are the physical manifestation of Adolph Loos' view of ornament as "crime." Loos would have loved these, as he despised ornamentation but loved luxury, and these allow the material's extravagant beauty and strength to be the focus, not the novelty of the design. That is why these have been regularly selling for over $750 each on specialty websites (which generally require sellers to engage in shipping/delivery, which I do not do). DetailsFinish: One table has been refinished and boasts a slightly glossier look with a darker stain compared to its mate, providing distinct choices for buyers, but also not especially noticeable to the casual observer, particularly when not immediately adjacent to each other, as they were placed for the photographs/video, so potential buyers could be fully aware of the distinctions of each. Condition: Both tables are in excellent condition for their age, representing authentic Mid-Century design from the 1950s—not reproductions or contemporary pieces. They are being sold as-is. Appointments for in-person viewing can be arranged. Purchase Options: These are being sold as a pair (buy it now price, etc.). Anyone wishing to purchase only one may make an offer and be sure to indicate which single table you wish to purchase. Viewing and Pickup: Shipping/delivery is not our specialty, but the seller will gladly work with the buyer or their shipping agent to arrange for convenient pickup from their midtown Atlanta location, available 24/7/365. Ebay requires sellers to offer shipping, so we do--reluctantly--and we will ship your purchase via the USPS service eBay recommends, but that is your choice for you to live with. We recommend you come pick them up.Interested buyers are welcome to inspect the tables prior to purchase, but appointments are necessary, and tables will not be held for any buyer. For extra pictures or video of the tables, please contact seller directly. Maker: W.H.
