massive L & I J White 2" wood gouge w/ showy turned handle total 2-1/2 pounds

Description: You are bidding on one massive L & I J White wood gouge with a showy handle as pictured.The blade is marked "l & I J WHITE" and also with owner initials "AWJ" twice.Width of the blade as measured with calipers, farthest outside point to farthest outside point, is not quite a 32nd over 2". Length of the steel portion (blade and neck) is about 12-3/16".The handle is a beautifully done replacement, and I'm not sure if the wood is a dark rosewood or an ebony. It features the heavy brass ferrule on the struck end. Overall length including the handle is about 20-11/16". The handle has not been drilled for a little attaching screw. The entire gouge weighs 2 pounds 8 ounces on my postal scale.Leonard White and Ichabod Jewett White were brothers who made edge tools and other tools in Monroe, Michigan, from 1837 to 1844, and in Buffalo, NY, beginning in 1844. They are still considered to be one of the premier, if not THE premier, edge tool maker in America. Condition of the steel portion (blade and neck) is generally good, with lots of patina (color) and some bits of pitting mostly on the back side and on the neck. Someone asked, and I would guess that the hole for the handle screw is not original, because it doesn't line up exactly with the centerline of the gouge blade. And that hole has been elongated as can be seen, but that could have happened later to an original hole.Condition of the handle is excellent, other than the brass ferrule could fit a little better. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it's not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20" long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30" long, because those longer packages won't fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights. I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, eBay requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect.SALES TAX: Interstate sales tax is now the reality on all the major selling websites including eBay. If I ship to a state where eBay is required to collect sales tax, eBay will charge you the sales tax for your location.
