Description: James Veitch & Sons, Chelsea [London, England]. 1887-1894. Hardcover. Originally issued in ten sections, copies routinely bound into two volumes. This set is in a 'bespoke' sheepskin leather binding with gilt title etc on spines with raised bands; gilt tooling on covers. Condition of bindings is fair at best with mostly detached spines and some loose sections in each volume. Bindings are quite rubbed with remnants of amateur repairs. Because the paper on which the text was printed is acidic, rebinding was not attempted, and thus each volume is now housed in its own bespoke acid-free linen-covered case. See photos for state of condition. This is the "Standard" edition in its original state of publication and remains one of the most difficult to find manuals on orchids from the nineteenth century. Each section is separately paginated. Many black and white engravings, some on folded plates. Maps in each volume, some colored and some folding (see photos). Some of the plates are detached and edge damaged as are a few of the text pages. If there are questions, please feel free to ask for clarification or additional details. # 4897.
