Description: The Mammalia Saloon. British Museum London England exhibit scene image VINTAGEWhat did the British Museum look like in the Victorian Era? This plate depicts the “Mammalia Saloon,” or the Hall of Mammals, as it appeared in the British Museum prior to the removal of natural history materials to the new British Museum (Natural History) in South Kensington. The move took place in the late 1870s, and new museum (now The Natural History Museum) opened in 1881 - approximately the time of the book’s first publication. This is “old” London. This plate was removed (not by us) from the book, Old and New London by W. Thornbury and Edward Walford, page 517. The book had several editions from 1879 to 1898.The plate shows giraffe skeleton and skin, elephant, rhinoceros, gorilla, hippopotamus, along with upper class Victorian visitors.Paper is in very good condition. No foxing. No mildew. Two strong creases where the page has been folded to isolate the image. When opened, the item is a full printed page from the original volume, pp. 517-518.The image size is 142x105mm (w x l) on the page.
