It was devastated by the Mongols led by Tolui (son of Chinghiz Khan) under the orders of Chinghiz Khan in 1221 CE. The Mongol onslaught was a reaction to the animosity shown by the Khwarizmshah Ala al-Din Muhammad-II who had killed Chinghiz Khan's emissaries and refused any diplomatic / trade relations. The city of Kurzuwan was besieged by the Mongols and the Al-Malik coins were issued probably by the local administrator after the city had been militarily and administratively abandoned and left to fare on its own. These coins are therefore the only identifiable Mongol siege coinage issued in the eastern Islamic province of Khurasan. A historically significant coin for Mongol and Islamic coin enthusiasts.
