Description: Lupinus texensis Alamo Fire is an annual herb in the Fabaceae family. Its native range is in Texas and Mexico. Familiar names include Texas Bluebonnet 'Texas Maroon' and Alamo Fire. It is endemic to Texas and some Mexican states. It has been found growing in the wild, displaying different colors such as white, light pink, and this maroon species. It is the official flower of the state of Texas. It prefers a sloped area in light to gravelly, well-drained soil. It can grow to around 1-2 feet tall and 12" wide in a mounded fashion. The leaves are alternate and palmate, with five leaflets about 1-2 inches long. The fragrant flowers are deep maroon with white tips. They are in bloom from late winter until early spring. The legume fruits are tough and light brown and speckled with black spots. It prefers to grow in full sun with little water needs. Birds, bees, and butterflies are attracted to it. Annual Germination Rub seeds on sandpaper, breaking the outer coat. Soak seeds 24 hours in warm water. Sow seeds 3x their thickness and cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic but maintain temperatures of 65-75F. Germination is in 7-30 days.
