We are pleased to offer LUMUMBA, an original 1981 Cuban poster, designed to salute the African independence leader Patrice Émery Lumumba who from June to September 1960 served as the first prime minister of the newly independent Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Republic of the Congo). This poster was released in Havana in 1981 to mark the 20th anniversary of Lumumba's assassination by firing squad following a military uprising backed by Belgium, which had ruled the country (one of Africa's largest) since 1908. Patrice Lumumba (1925-1961) is widely regarded as a hero of the African independence movement. This bold, original Cuban poster was printed in 1981 by the Havana-based Organization of Solidarity of the People of Asia, Africa & Latin America (OSPAAAL), which was founded in 1966 to demonstrate solidarity among socialist countries and promote various independence movements and other causes, including U.S. civil rights. OSPAAAL closed its doors in June 2019 after a long run as a publisher of imaginative Cuban poster art. OSPAAAL posters can be found in museum and gallery collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., as well as in numerous books about Cuban graphic art. The LUMUMBA poster was designed by Rafael Enriquez, one of OSPAAAL's most prominent designers. As was the custom with many OSPAAAL posters, the words on this graphic ("20th Anniversary") were printed in four languages: English, Spanish, French and Arabic. This poster measures approximately 28 by 19 inches (71 x 48 cm). Please note that reproductions have been made of this and other OSPAAAL posters in Cuba and the United States. The poster we are offering in this listing is 100 percent genuine -- and original. Overall condition of this poster is good with some imperfections. We have posted a sample image of this poster because we have several copies in our stock. The poster you will receive could have some wrinkles on the borders and small pin holes, created by insects in Cuba--imperfections that are common on many OSPAAAL posters. We will send you the best LUMUMBA poster in our stock! Buy with 100 percent confidence: all posters purchased from the Cuban Poster Gallery on eBay can be returned for any reason within 30 days.
