Description: Loblolly Pine, Pinus taeda, Tree Seeds Hardy, Easy to Grow, Fast Growth, Bonsai, Christmas Tree, Evergreen, Timber, Fragrant, Screen/Windbreak, Southern Pine, Swamp Tolerant Loblolly Pine is a fast growing, medium to tall evergreen conifer that is native to the Southeastern United States where it typically grows from sea level to 2400 feet in a variety of conditions ranging from poorly drained low wet areas, bottomland forests and flatlands to well-drained upland soils. It typically grows to 40 to 50 feet in cultivation, but may reach 100 feet tall or more in the wild. This tree is particularly noted for its straight trunk and wide spreading branches. It loses its lower branches as it matures, gradually developing a dense oval-rounded crown. Bark is scaly gray developing furrows with age. The fragrant dark yellow-green needles are 6 to 10 inches long in bundles of three (infrequently in bundles of two) are finely-toothed, stiff and slender. Cones appear in groups of 2 to 5, stalkless, oval-cylindrical, 3 to 6 inches long with sharply-spined scales. Loblolly Pine is among the fastest growing southern pines, it is extensively cultivated in forest plantations for pulpwood and lumber. Taeda comes from a Latin word for pine tree. Loblolly means mudhole in reference to the swampy areas where this tree often grows in the wild. Leaf: Evergreen needles, 6 to 9 inches long, with (usually) three yellow-green needles per fascicle. Flower: Monoecious; males long cylindrical, red to yellow, in clusters at branch tips; females yellow to purple. Fruit: Ovoid to cylindrical, 3 to 6 inch red-brown cones; umbo is armed with a short spine, maturing in early fall. Twig: Orange-brown in color, fine to moderately stout; buds are narrowly ovoid, light reddish brown. Bark: Initially red- to gray-brown and scaly; older trees are ridged and furrowed, with somewhat rounded scaly plates; very old trees have red-brown, flat scaly plates. Form: A medium to large tree can reach well over 100 feet tall, self-prunes well and develops a fairly straight trunk and an oval, somewhat open wide spreading crown.
