Taylor, a frail little haole woman of 65, who has, since 1947, been writing the Star-Bulletin's column on Hawaiiana. Her life in these years lias been devoted to unearthing the truth about the forebears of almost every racial group in the Islands. As a result her home in St. Louis Heights is filled with books on Island cultures and file cabinets jammed with bits of information and notes on the history of the Island peoples. MRS. TAYLOR came to the Islands from her home in Montana when she was 21 years old. She had just finished nursing school and undergone a seige of tuberculosis. With the hope that the climate would help her regain her strength she came to Hawaii and settled on Kauai. Within a a half-cenfury end RmI Hetelf few months she was able to go to work as a nurse in a hospital at Lihue, and then spent some 35 years as County Health Nurse. During these years she was gathering information about the people with whom she was associating simply because she was interested and not with any idea of publishing what she found. At the same time she was correspondent for the Star-Bulletin. During the latter days of World War II, the paper brought her to Honolulu to work on the copy desk. At the time, Donald Bil-lam-Walker was writing the paper's stories on Hawaiiana, and when he left, she eagerly "stepped into the job. Her first story was on the 12 wives of King Ka-mehameha. "Like all beginners, I thought I had to tell everything I knew in one story, she said. As a result her early columns were more than loaded with information. The story of the 12 wives led naturally to other stories about the historical characters she uncovered, and the story has been going on ever since. She has developed a close relationship with many people in all racial groups, especially the Ha-waiians. "Everything I write is examined with a fine tooth comb, and if I make a mistake, some of my Hawaiian friends will be on the phone within a few minutes to straighten me out." OCCASIONALLY she gets in trouble. Taylor's first research into the happenings of ancient Hawaii left her with an intense interest in the fate of the descendants of the royal families.
