Description: This unmarked porcelain jar was made during the reign of the emperor Hongwu (1368-1398 AD) during the Ming (1368-1644 AD) dynasty. The painted decoration is a hold over from the previous Yuan (Mongol) dynasty. It has been rendered in a rather heavy-handed manner. The bright red color is, however, exceptional. It was quite common for the copper based pigment to disappear or turn dull grey during firing in the kiln. This piece has survived in good condition with typical wear to the foot ring and staining to the interior. The glaze exhibits a fine crackle pattern with has darkened slightly with age H 10 3/4"
