Description: Template1 Japanese Antique Kakejiku Hanging Scroll Dragon vs. Tiger Set of 2 by Nagasawa Roshu Edo Era Item Description Overall Size 44.5 x 179 cm Image Size 33.5 x 97.5 cm Nagasawa Roshu (1767-1847) Painter and print artist. Roshu's eccentricity had found supreme, not to say extreme, expression in his teacher Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754-99), one of the greatest stylists who ever wielded a brush. Roshu was adopted into the Nagasawa family as Rosetsu's main pupil and successor within the Maruyama school, a role he carried out punctiliously for almost a half century after Rosetsu's death. But though he was faithful to many of the stylistic innovations made by Rosetsu, in general the evidence of Roshu's works suggests a character much more placid than that of his wild teacher. By far the most impressive of Roshu's surviving accomplishments is a set of forty-four painted sliding door panels ('fusuma-e') of animal (especially tigers), bird-and-flower and landscape subjects in the guest apartments of the Zen temple Keitoku-in in Kyoto, thought to have been painted when the building was refurbished in 1804 (Sasaki Johei, ed., 'Kyoto gadan nojukyu seiki, vol. 2: Burika, Bunsei-ki', Kyoto, Shibunkaku, 1994, no. 54). - From BritishMuseum.org Shipping Shipping by FedEx Priority or EMS We do not ship to APO/FPO and PO Box.
