JOSEPH JEFFERSON - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 04/05/1903 - HFSID 86935 JOSEPH JEFFERSON Jefferson handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1903. In it, he apologizes that he can't accept an invitation because he'll be acting in Harlem. Addressed to "My Dear Mr. Choate". In full: "I am much gratified at the high compliment you have paid me, and regret that I can not accept the honor - On the date you name May the 9th I shall be acting in Harlem in both the afternoon and evening - If I could change the date I would do so, but under the terms of my engagement it is quite impossible thanking you for the curtesy [sic] of your invitation I am sincerely yours". On stage since the age of three, American actor Jefferson (1829-1905) starred with Laura Keene's company in 19th century stage successes such as Our American Cousin, The Cricket on the Hearth and The Rivals. Folded once horizontally and thrice vertically and unfolded. Worn and with pinholes along folds. Otherwise in fine condition.
