Background -- John Howard FRS (2 September 1726 – 20 January 1790) was a philanthropist and early English prison reformer. Whilst at Kherson, Howard contracted typhus on a prison visit and died, aged sixty-three. There is a monument to John Howard in Kherson which includes a sun dial. This is connected to his last words “Lay me quietly in the earth, place a sun-dial over my grave, and let me be forgotten.”
