Description: Joel Rohr (1912-98) Painting Item: Original painting, "Ein Hod", by Art Students League artist Joel Rohr, whose work is in the National Gallery Of Art (Constitution Ave. & 6th St.) of the Smithsonian. You can read about him also on The Israel Museum site or the many other sources. Rohr was born in Poland, was a working American Modernist painter and printmaker in the 30's and 40's, moved to Israel in 1946 and his artwork was some of the most collected in that country as he was an Award-winning / renowned Modernist & Founder of the Yemin Moshe Artists Quarter. I have seven paintings by this artist and two serigraphs if you'd like to view my other listings -- all are guaranteed authentic and are fine examples of Rohr's work, which had no slant or leaning towardas any group, rather depicted what was right in front of him including Christian people, Jewish people, Bedouin Arab people, etc. and the areas in which they lived. Unframed; ships rolled in a tube. Markings: Signed and inscribed. Age: ca. 1960's or so, I'd think, but honestly I can't read some of the inscriptions. Condition: Used. Watercolor on paper with some condition issues related to age or previous attachment to matting. May have waviness, old tape on the back, marks, etc. -- please have it restored or not per your tastes or requirements. Dimensions: Approx. 13 1/2 x 19 3/4 INCHES. Origin: Discovered in the USA. Features: A beautiful and historically significant watercolor painting by Mr. Rohr which would be a wonderful addition to any American or Int'l art collection... Background: From the net: Yoel (aka Joel) Rohr was born in Lwow, Poland, on September 13, 1912, and died in California in 1998. He moved to Israel in 1946 and was a member of Kibbutz Kfar Menachem until 1968, when he moved to Yamin Moshe in Jerusalem. Joel Rohr set up his easel in practically every corner of Israel. His work portrayed some of the most revered sites in the Holy Land. He lived and studied in New York City and by exhibiting there had already made a name for himself as a painter, but in 1946, he felt the desire for a simpler and more rustic life, so he immigrated to wartime Israel. He joined Kibbutz Kfar Menahem, worked as a farmer, participated in the War of Liberation, and at no time ignored his urge to paint. His drawings of that time were in the 1960s among the most popular in Israel. From The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, site: Joel Rohr, born 1912, Poland. 1927 moved to U.S.A. Became a founder of Yemin Moshe Artists' Quarter, Jerusalem. Lived many years on Kibbutz Kfar Menachem. Education = 1936 U.S. Alliance Art School, New York, Art Students' League.
