Description: Offered here are an unusual pair of maps old old Jerusalem both in very good condition. First we have E.D. Clarke's drawing of the historic ancient city, engraved on copper by S. Neele and published by Cadell & Davies in 1812. It is entitled "A New Plan of Jerusalem in which some attempt is made to reconcile historical documents...."This was the result of Clarke's actual observations and investigations on site. This plan has massive margins (not seen by my A4 scanner) and a clear plate impression mark. Image size 200x255mm plus those wide margins The second plan dates from 1863 as published by Stanford's Geographical Establishment and shows Dr.Whitty's proposed water supply and sewerage for the Holy City. No! not Dr.Chris Whitty! It was John Irvine Whitty. You can google this and there is a fascinating read from a contemporaneous article about his project. I am fascinated by this as it shows such as -Russian establishment, Jewish Quarter, Mohameddan Quarter, Modern Zion, Modern Akha, Grotto of Jeremiah, Wall of Herod Agrippa, Haram Es Sherif, David's Tow, ruins of a Roman aqueduct. Staggering historical value. One original fold image 215x265mm with a narrow left margin, other margins broad. I have no idea of the real monetary value of this rare pair but I am anxious they go to someone who will study them. So, I am offering them at the silly price of £25 the pair.
