FACTUAL PRESENTATION OF OUR WESTERN TREASURES As many of you know, I research old western books and magazines to find Americana history that I feel has been seldom found, overlooked, and rarely read. When I find one I like, I report to my Ebay friends. Here is "The Town That Copper Built," by Harriett Farnsworth. The author recites that where once the pit-dwelling Tuzigoot Indians scrounged for the prettiest and shiniest of the green and blue azurite stones for ornamentation, centuries later great commercial companies mined for copper. Perched precariously on the side of Cleopatra Peak was Jerome, Arizona - the mining town that refused to die. The history is that when Phelps-Dodge closed down the United Verde in 1953, the open pit was leased by a three man partnership operating as the Big Hole Mining Company. First discovered by Al Sieber who submitted the first mining claim called Verde Silver in 1876, prospectors rushed in. Two of them, M. A. Ruffner and Angus McKinnon staked out the Eureka and Wade Hampton Mines. Needing more cash, they took in George McKinnon as a partner. They soon leased the mines to the Governor of Arizona, Frederick A.Trittle. The Governor had some connections and got a guy named James McDonald and a colorful character named Eugene Jerome in the venture. BUT ONLY IF THE MINING TOWN WAS NAMED JEROME!!! (the guy had an ego). Soon, the Eureka and Wade Hampton became the nucleus of the United Verde Copper Company that produced over $500 Million. This, then is the history of what happened to the mine and Jerome. Love IT!!! Well, wish I could write more but this is real mining history that you have not read or seen before as it was printed in this old western magazine. What a Rare Story!!! Great Pictures, the photos are the property of the author, Harriett Farnsworth. Eight years ago, while searching my families genealogy, I found that my grandfather had been the subject of an article when he had run for Constable of Belton, Texas. During my research, I discovered that thousands of our kinfolks lay unfound and unrecognized on some book dealer's shelf. Since then, I have dedicated my remaining hours to indexing the Genealogy of our western pioneers. See index below. I hope you appreciate the effort. Folks, sooner or later - Genealogists are going to realize that their family kinfolks are laying on some dealer's dusty shelves. If I can contribute to finding one little name or photo of that long lost ancestor you have been waiting to find,- its worth all the time I spend.
