Description: Jane Eyre (1970 TV Movie) Please be advised: This, and some other DVD versions of this TV movie, were taken from a not perfect, 1970s quality film, and no digital enhancement was done. I do not know if there is a higher quality version available in digital format. George C. Scott and Susannah York star in "Jane Eyre", Charlotte Bronte's immortal love story. Voted Best Made for TV, Best Actor and Best Actress in a poll of 1000 TV editors. A motion picture filmed in England for the BELL SYSTEM FAMILY THEATER Jane Eyre is an orphan, sent to Lowood school, and eventually becomes a governess at Thornfield hall to a girl named Adele. While she is there, many strange things happen and eventually she and Edward Rochester, owner of Thornfield and Adele's guardian, fall in love. Suddenly, when Jane is about to win the happiness she deserves, a dark secret comes to light, and it will take all of her courage, love and understanding to triumph. With a stunning music score by John Williams, top direction, and excellent cast, Charlotte Bronte's Victorian novel blazes on the screen under the directing talents of Delbert Mann. Although filmed on numerous occasions, this version features landmark performances by George C. Scott, Susannah York, Ian Bannen, Jack Hawkins, and Nyree Dawn Porter. York is Jane Eyre, the orphaned girl who secures a position as governess to the ward of Edward Rochester (George C. Scott), Lord of the English manor house "Thornfield", whose halls hide a dark and sinister secret, Jane Eyre and the moody Rochester soon fall in love and marry. But on the fated wedding day, Rochester's dark past comes back to haunt him and his innocent new bride. In other versions, one just couldn't fancy Orson Welles, and William Hurt was just a sap and Timothy Dalton melodramatic. George C Scott was as rough and gruff as Mr Rochester was supposed to be. When you first read of him, Jane is quite frightened - he has a large personality, makes a lot of noise and kicks things about. Gradually we see a softer side and soon you really want the guy to be happy. The set appeared right out of my own imagination and the creepy bit made me lift my ankles from below the sofa. The score is absolutely brilliant - oh those violins really get your heart pumping'. Ian Bannen is suitably slimy as St John (sinjin). Susannha York was a bit too pretty to be Jane Eyre but she tried her best. She was flavour of the month at the time and I can't remember what other actresses were around that would have been more suited. Jane was supposed to be VERY plain, and considerably younger than Mr Rochester. Nyree Dawn Porter played Blanche beautifully and sympathetically.
