Description: "Indirect Edges: Joseph Friebert Experimental Years" 2023 Exhibition Catalog Madron Gallery Chicago 11 x 8.5 inches, 27 pages. A beautifully produced catalog on heavy stock – full color. Essay by Alex Cornacchia “Why certain periods in an artist’s career endure where others are forgotten is not always a straightforward matter. Joseph Friebert’s (1908–2002) journey into semi-abstraction — a quiet and personal interpretation of space, color, and texture — brought him international attention at the 1956 Venice Biennale. Yet today his work from this era is often overlooked, the focus remaining on his earlier landscapes and Social Realist compositions. This exhibition is a re-introduction to the more than two decades where Friebert pushed himself in a new artistic direction, away from representation. Using the painting techniques of the Old Masters and drawing inspiration from Milwaukee’s architecture and surrounding rural landscapes, Friebert created a unique visual vernacular with his semi-abstractions, one of glowing horizons, interwoven forms, and nebulous edges.” See my other auctions of RARE photo and art catalogs, Chicago history, art deco, photography books, art and more!
