Description: The Illustrated Handbook of Architecture 1855 Plus Art of Building $11 on CD - Delivered For $2 anywhere in the United States International Shipping $4 Here are two of the most IMPORTANT architectural books of all time in .pdf format. The Illustrated Handbook of Architecture by James Fergusson was originally created in 1855. Before it came out, the only way for an architect to complete his education was to take the GRAND TOUR of Europe and the ancient lands and examine and learn from the marvels of architecture at first hand. In 1855, photography was in its infancy and there was as yet no method of printing photographs. It was possible to create marvelously accurate woodcuts from photographic images. If you studied architecture or history art you have probably seen many of the illustrations in this collection, because they remain to this day the finest examples of their kind ever produced. Often times, the actual building has been lost to fire, earthquake or war. This collection was particularly influential in America. It’s excellent record of Gothic architecture fueled the gothic revival style. Traite Theorique et Pratique de L’art de Batir is known in the English-speaking world as The Art of Architecture. It was originally created in 1817 by Jean Baptise Rondelet. Rondelet was one of the architects of the Pantheon in Paris. This work was originally presented in seven volumes. I have not reproduced the text, but only the VERY impressive copper engravings that illustrated the piece. These cover almost every aspect of building in stone, road construction, bridges, domes and trusses. That sounds rather boring..really you would not BELIEVE what is packed into these amazing plates. One details elaborate door and window hardware, another shows clever revolving drawers for a gentleman’s closet, even clothes hangers and trouser hangers are depicted. Venetian blinds and shutters, the casework for a pipe organ, amazing helical stairways, flooring systems designed to bridge large areas using only relatively short timbers, graceful cast iron bridges, amazing wooden cranes for raising masonry into place, arch centering, onion domes, and MORE. The Illustrated Handbook of Architecture is 525 pages long and contains 650 woodcuts. There are 191 plates in The Art of Building. Together That Is 716 Pages I have set these 2 sections up as .pdf files that open in Adobe Acrobat Reader. You will be able to enlarge or reduce the pages, rotate them, zoom in and out and even do captures with the newer versions of acrobat. IN ADDITION, I have created a sort of CLIPART section consisting of all the larger illustrations from the Illustrated Handbook of Architecture and all the illustrations from The Art of Building optimized for printing as jpegs. These are wonderful architectural images for illustrating reports, for all manners of graphic design. There are 498 images in this clipart section. You don’t have to be an architect or art historian to benefit from this collection. If you are a house carpenter or contractor you will find a great deal of PRACTICAL use in this information. Designers, set designers, graphic artists, and fine artists and anyone interested in what are now largely “lost arts” will find insight and inspiration in the images. Of course in addition to the images you get the full text of Illustrated Handbook of Architecture. Like everyone, I enjoy looking at the pictures but it is a very readable text and it is directed at WHY buildings were constructed in certain ways. I have to admit that it changed the way I thought about a good many things! The original images have been cropped; artificial coloration and contrast have been adjusted, so as to be readily inserted into reports, and used as graphics. All of these images are public domain and can be used freely. You can view them on the computer, save them or print them out for reference. You will be benefiting from the time I spent organizing these images, as everything is separated.
