But leave it to iFi to one-up themselves. The new NEO iDSD 2 features the same sleek design, but with a slew of useful sound quality-focused improvements. Oh, and it's the world's first lossless Bluetooth DAC/headphone amp. Lossless Bluetooth for premium wireless sound Bluetooth sound quality has improved in recent years. But up to now, even higher-fidelity versions of the wireless technology have relied upon a type of compression resulting in a loss of detail. That's an issue that iFi found a workaround for. The NEO iDSD 2 features Bluetooth version 5.4 with the latest Qualcomm QCC518x Bluetooth audio chip. It offers aptX Lossless, the only Bluetooth codec available today that can stream lossless CD-quality audio. All other major Bluetooth codecs are supported, too, including aptX, aptX Adaptive, and LDAC. To put it into perspective: aptX HD, one of the most popular Bluetooth codecs, streams at around 576kbps (kilobits per second). Sony's proprietary LDAC codec streams at 990kbps. aptX Lossless clocks in at an astonishing 1,200kbps. That means you don't have to give up dynamic, rich sound for the sake of convenient wireless streaming. Plenty of power on tap for headphones The NEO iDSD 2's internal headphone amplifier is quite the powerhouse. It deals out a whopping 5,551mW at 32 ohms, over five times more than its predecessor. Advanced, user-selectable digital and analog processing modes let you fine-tune the sound. There's also a handy iEMatch gain mode that gets rid of the hiss some sensitive in-ear monitors have when connected to a headphone amplifier. App control for fine adjustments You can download the iFi Nexis app on your smartphone (available on Android™ and iOS®) for more control over the NEO iDSD 2. You can perform over-the-air firmware updates and adjust various functions and settings, like turning on and off the XBass and XSpace listening modes.
