Hopi tobacco has a high concentration of nicotine (approximately 9% , far greater than commercial tobacco of 1-3%) that makes it useful for a variety of purposes. It has alkaloid compounds that have been bred out most tobaccos found on the market. The effect of Hopi tobacco can be substantial, resulting in hallucinations and marked physiological effects. The Hopi use it extensively in religious ceremonies and rituals not only to mention organic pesticide, asthma, rheumatism, chills, fevers, earaches, toothaches, childbirth pains, cramps, stomach aches, and headaches. Poultice of the beaten plant is used for boils and applied to insect bites. Use caution when smoking it. Also, wear gloves when removing leaves or flower heads. The sticky resins can absorb into your skin, causing nicotine sickness or light headedness. Hopi tobacco is easy to grow in zones 5-11. It's a tender annual that can grow 18" to 48" in height. The flower clusters are greenish yellow. It will grow in many types of soil. Of course using rich well draining soil is usually best. More cold hardy than most varieties. It doesn't need much attention. Once the leaves start turning yellow, remove them and hang to dry. You'll want to hang them where they will dry during the day and pick up moisture at night. The leaves are cured once they are golden brown without any green. This takes a month or two. You can then roll them into cigars. The leaves should have some moisture so that they are flexible. Take 7 leaves and lay them one on top of another, stem to tip. Roll them and twist each end in opposite directions. Shave off the end each time you use. Great for rituals, smudging and smoking and blended tobacco/herbs. Note: Medicinal uses of herbs mentioned are not intended nor implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice.
