Description: In HILL, Paul Landacre explored sensuality in the landscape. He replaced the flowing lines of the hillside with soft, slightly rounded cross-hatching to define the velvet hillside in front of the white sky of a setting sun. HILL was included in the second series of prints presented to the Paul Landacre Association’s members, and was shown in the 1938 Venice Biennale. This rare wood engraving has only been seen at auction five times in the past 30 years.Medium: B&W Wood Engraving on rare Cream Wove Japanese Paper — First Edition, Printed by the Artist.Image Size: 11.6875 in (29.69 cm) W x 5 in (12.7 cm) HFrame: Matted, Not Framed — 10.625 in (29.68 cm) W x 7.25 in (18.42 cm) HCondition: Original brown paper hinges in the top sheet edge; Margins (7/8 in to 1 15/16 in). When he was 20, a near-fatal streptococcus infection forced him to find a warmer climate and less strenuous work. He moved to southern California and studied wood engraving. In 1930, he held his first exhibition in Los Angeles. Landacre’s early work applied parallel lines and curves to landscapes. By the mid-1930s, this technique evolved into precise cutting and crosshatching, bold contrasts and abstraction; moving woodcut prints beyond what prior artists had accomplished. During the Great Depression, he sold prints through the Paul Landacre Association, on a monthly subscription basis. These prints, including HILL, were printed in limited editions of 50 to 60 copies. His lithographs of southern California landscapes were considered some of the best work of his era, and continue to impress in the 21st century.
