HERMAN RAUCHER - TYPESCRIPT SIGNED - HFSID 169459 HERMAN RAUCHER: SUMMER OF '42 An excerpt from his screenplay and novel, The Summer of 42. Typescript signed: "Herman Raucher", 1p, 8½x11. Headed: "An excerpt from/THE SUMMER OF 42/by/HERMAN RAUCHER". In part: "He had always intended to come back, to see the island again. But the opportunity had never quite presented itself. This time, however, with a break in his schedule and with events moving remarkably in his favor, he had driven far up the New England coast to see if the magic still prevailed...The Mercedes moved with disinterest along what purported to be the Packett Island Coastway, for the speed limit was thirty, hardly a challenge for an exhumed LaSalle, let alone a hot Mercedes-Benz. To his left were the familiar dunes, sulking in the grass, incongruously scattered with the uncatalogued refuse and bleached timber that the sea could toss so casually across the road whenever it felt so disposed...." Raucher's coming of age screenplay introduced the nation to Hermie, a World War II teenager that falls for the wife of a soldier. The film starred Jennifer O'Neill and Gary Grimes, and his script was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1971. The popular Summer of '42 was later novelized by Raucher, who followed the film with a sequel, Class of '44 (1973). Fine condition.
