Description: This is a rare advertising postcard of H. B. IRVING in the title role of "HAMLET", used to promote the West End engagement of the WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE tragedy at the Adelphi Theatre in London beginning April 4th, 1905 ..... The play starred H. B. IRVING as "Hamlet", LILY BRAYTON as "Ophelia", OSCAR ASCHE as "Claudius" and MAUD MILTON as "Gertrude" ..... Side note: HARRY B. IRVING (August 5th, 1870 – October 17th, 1919), was a British stage actor and the eldest son of Shakespearean actor Sir Henry Irving. In 1904, only a year before his father's sudden death on October 13th 1905, Irving played Hamlet for the first time. The production, which was a popular success, was presented at the Adelphi Theatre, with Oscar Asche as Claudius, Walter Hampden as Laertes and Lily Brayton as Ophelia. After his father's death, he established his own company, that included his wife (Dorothea Baird), and toured most provincial cities, playing mainly repeats of Sir Henry Irving's best remembered performances. For the opening night of the new King's Theatre in Southsea, he presented Charles I, The Bells and The Lyons Mail. Occasionally, other plays were presented including, most successfully, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde at the Queen's Theatre, London ..... DETAILS: The postcard measures 3 1/2" X 5 1/2" inches and was never postally used. The correspondence side lists the names of the leading actors and the opening date ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a tiny abrasion in the top left corner and light edge wear, this rare postcard is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
