Description: Staffordshire Blue 17" PlatterGreat House in Rural SceneHandsome Piece by Unknown Maker ITEM DESCRIPTION: On this well-engraved platter of beautiful medium-to-dark-blue Staffordshire, an ornate floral border surrounds a central scene of a great house in a rural landscape with high mountains in the background. The piece is unmarked as to series or maker. The border has large flowers set against a background of dark blue. In each corner of the border is a motif resembling open bird wings that is probably intended to be leaves joined together. THE SCENE: An impressive building sits in a rural landscape with mountains in the background. Wrapping the grounds of the house is a lake or river. Framing the scene, inside the stringer surrounding the central scene, is a typical foliage setting through the scene is observed. At the foreground of this foliage setting is a woman out walking with a little boy, the pair standing before what appears to be a tramp or wanderer sitting on a rock, holding a walking stick. A helpful fellow eBayer tells me that in the Transferware Collectors Club database #13148, the scene is identified as "Raj Ghaul and Fort of Allahabad" from the Flower Panel Border series. The maker is evidently unknown. MARK: The piece is unmarked as to series, scene, or maker. On the back there is an impressed number "16" and a printed number "5". DATE: Due to a lack of mark, it is impossible to date the piece with certainty; however, in its style, subject matter, and color it is typical of the pieces being produced in the Staffordshire potteries area of England between 1825 and 1835. MEASUREMENTS: From rim edge to rim edge, the platter is 17" in width and 13-1/4" height. It is 1-1/2" deep. CONDITION: No cracks, no breaks. The piece displays beautifully. The front of the plate looks as if was made yesterday, being a brilliant medium-to-dark-blue with a high shine and only very light crazing. There are these manufacturing artifacts on the front: (1) Light crazing on border; (2) At top rim, approximately 5" from left-hand side, is a manufacturing flaw approximately 1/2" wide that has discolored; (3) On top border, approximately 8" from left-hand side and 1-1/2" from top rim, is an area approximately 1/2" wide that shows a faintly yellowed surface that may or may not originally have derived from a manufacturing issue. The back shows stilt marks and minor discoloration specks, as well as bottom wear and light crazing. Approximately 3-1/2" from left hand side and 4" from bottom rim is a 3/8" scratch that appears to be a manufacturing issue. Please refer to and enlarge the photographs, as they are of the actual piece on offer, clearly show the condition, and form part of the description. The Buy-It-Now price is set with the condition taken into account. RARITY: Both the series and this particular piece are relatively rare. I haven't been able to find another example of this scene and size. NOTE: Please ask any questions prior to bidding, as all sales are final unless buyer and seller agree that there is error or misrepresentation in this description. SHIPPING: This item, properly packed, will be shipped only within the U.S. via USPS Priority Mail to a confirmed address. An interesting view from an unidentified maker of high-quality Staffordshire Blue. A significant addition to any collection of early nineteenth-century Blue featuring landscape and/or great houses.
