The pivot ball is NOT movable with your fingers. It must first be mounted to a mounting arm for proper leverage. The pivot ball and stud assembly will then be able to be moved for proper mirror placement. It is purposely built in this manner with this amount of tension on the pivot ball so that the mirror has proper placement and retention. It also is convex mirror which gives you a very wide angle view. I can see out the side windows in the back of my sedan. Takes some getting used to but still a benefit for safety.
