Description: This is an unique Richie Owens Bayou Electric Resonator ( electro-resonator guitar ) with the Zeta National pickup system, in excellent condition. The Owens Zeta Electro-Acoustic has been described as a Resonator, with a modern twist. It’s quite a hi-tech guitar; if you look inside the f-hole you can see the electronics, which control the magnetic neck pickup and the Zeta-designed biscuit pickup. The shallow single cutaway body looks awesome with the dark bronze textured powder coat finish. This USA built guitar was designed by musician, luthier, engineer and producer Richie Owens and for a brief period of time (in 2002) and made by Crafters of Tennessee. Then, when ZETA Music industries Inc. (who makes electric violins, cellos, basses etc.) bought the rights to Owens Guitars, they had some of these Resophonic guitars equipped with their famous Strados amplification system. This is one of them, less than 20 of these guitars received amplification. Price was $3300. Purchased from USA in 2007. The guitar comes with original hard-shell case in photos. Made in the U.S. The brainchild of guitarist/producer/luthier Richie Owens, the enterprise bearing his name is now a part of Zeta Music Systems, a company known for its groundbreaking electric violins and other bowed instruments. Considering the Bayou`s unique design features, the company appears to have found an appropriate home at Zeta. The Bayou immediately departs from tradition with its aluminum body as well as its neck design. Most resophonic guitars (including all of the others we reviewed for this article) feature an extended neck that goes all the way through the body and attaches to the rim inside. The Bayou`s neck is bolted to the body at the heel (where there`s a wood interior neck block), just like in many contemporary flattop guitars. The neck is also angled back to a larger degree than the necks of other resonator guitars, resulting in a steeper angle where the strings pass over the saddle and increased pressure on the instrument`s cone, with the intention of increasing its volume. Additionally, the fingerboard features a compound radius, resulting in a greater curve at the first fret than at the 20th, which, in theory, improves playing comfort. Finally, Owens made use of Zeta`s expertise in the field of amplification, equipping the Bayou with a proprietary active pickup system that`s an integral part of its biscuit. With a silver, textured powder-coat finish (other colors, as well as nickel-plating, are also available), tribal-looking coverplate openings, and a distinctive abalone inlay in the fingerboard, the Bayou has a unique appearance as well. The review instrument`s craftsmanship was quite good all around. The pickup system is unobtrusive; the only visible element is a jack at the lower bout. The system`s preamp lives inside the guitar`s body, and the output for each string`s signal can be adjusted individually with a screwdriver through the bass-side f-hole. The first thing we noticed when we picked up the Bayou was how light it was thanks to its aluminum body even with the onboard electronics. The instrument displayed great note separation and sustain, with a cool "echoey" decay."
