Los Caprichos (translation: caprices – whims or quirks) The eighty etchings that make up Goya’s most important series of prints, Los Caprichos (1799), have long been recognized as one of the supreme monuments of European art. A believer in the potential power of reason, his works show what happens when reason is trampled underfoot by individual human follies and corrupt social customs. In these works Goya looks at his country, Spain, and memorializes it as a monument to desperation, folly, arrogance, incompetence, and the need that some of his subjects have to try to control the uncontrollable. The eighty prints cover subjects of prostitution, child abuse, witchcraft, numerous superstitions, and satiric critiques of doctors, politicians, and clergy, among others. Nearly half of the imagery concerns itself with witchcraft often in a mocking tone that shows Goya's use of this particular subject was meant to have more than just one single understanding for the viewer. Nobody knows himself - Caprichos 6 Goya wrote, "The world is a masquerade. Face, dress, and voice, all are false. All wish to appear what they are not. All deceive." And still they don't go! - Caprichos 59 Goya comments, "He who does not reflect on the inconstancy of fortune sleeps peacefully surrounded by dangers; he does not know how to avoid the danger which threatens him, and there is no misfortune which does not surprise him." What one does to another - Caprichos 77 Goya comments, "It is the way of the world. People jest and fight with one another. He who yesterday played the part of the bull, today plays the 'caballero in plaza.' Fortune presides over the show and allots the parts according to the inconstancy of her caprices." Here, almost at the end of Los Caprichos, Goya points us towards the way to interpret the images he has offered us. ""La fortuna dirige la fiesta y distribuye los papeles segun la inconstancia de sus caprichos." The world is full of caprices: those of the rich and aristocratic and those of the poor and the downtrodden; those of the Inquisition and those of the witches and goblins who are their professed enemies. It would seem to be the task of those viewing Goya's work to awaken their reason and put asides the nightmares of disordered imaginations so that they might learn to see the real monsters: the Inquisition, the rigid power structure of a society that rewards some fools with power and wealth while punishing others with the necessity of entering into unloving unions in attempts to save their families from destitution and themselves from prostitution. Francisco Goya (1746-1848) the famous Spanish court painter turned increasingly to drawing as his primary means of artistic expression after 1795. He filled over eight albums of approximately 600 drawings and published four major print cycles of etchings depicting a society in transition. With pitiless observation he captured an unstable and restless Spain – a Spain suffering from religious Inquisition, a corrupt deluded aristocracy, social injustice, violent crime and the atrocities of a guerilla war against Napoleon’s invasion of 1808. Drawn with a pessimistic and cynical yet truthful eye, his subject matter dealt with the realities of everyday life, fables, witchcraft, the church, social injustices and the disasters of war. Goya’s art invented a new type of art; art as visual reportage that virtually anticipated photojournalism and recorded a beleaguered society at the advent of the 19th century.
