Description: Francis Wu 1911-1989 The Fisherman's Daughter 1955 . Halftone print, lovely quality. From a vintage copy of Photograms of the Year 1955. Francis Wu was a prominent Hong Kong photographer who helped define 20th Century Chinese photography. Classical Chinese paintings and literature influenced his composition and lighting. He photographed Hong Kong as the city recovered and rebuilt after WWII, capturing historic events for the British government and the media. Francis Wu, who moved to Hong Kong in 1931, always wanted to show the world that Hong Kong is to be respected and recognized in the field of photography. His fine art photographs gained recognition worldwide through his participation and awards received from the Photographic Society of America which included a one man show of his work in 1957 at The Smithsonian Museum of Art. In 1971, Mr. Wu was invited by the Chinese government and went on a 40-day photo expedition to Northern China. At that time, he was the only photographer allowed into China. His photographic record of this trip resulted in a memorable exhibition at Hong Kong City Hall, and the exhibition went on a one year tour to Australia, the United States and other countries.
