Florida Archaic Culture Collection 1/3

Description: I am a retired science and history teacher who purchased this collection of artifacts from the Estate of Benjamin 'Ben' Waller. I knew him in life and shared his passion for Florida artifacts and fossils. There are 7 total items in this Riker case. See photos for size. Points, Scrapers and Knife Blades The Archaic Culture 7,000 – 4,500 years agoThis time period is marked by the final glacial retreat on the North American Continent. Excavations at Archaic sites near permanent water sources or along rivers have produced new types of tools and weapons. It is this introduction of new styles that marks the difference between the Archaic Period and the preceding Paleo Period. The range of stone tools includes drills, choppers, flake knives and scrapers, gouges, and hammerstones. Sites such as Windover Bog near present-day Titusville, Florida, enlarge this inventory to include bone points, atlatl hooks, barbed points, fish hooks, pins, shell adzes, wooden stakes, canoes and fragments of cloth and woven bags. The Archaic people appear to have been a residentially stable hunting and gathering society that seasonally occupied base camps along major water courses and exploited stone and food resources within the stream drainages. About Ben I. Waller:Ben Waller (d. 1992) was an amateur archaeologist and paleontologist who discovered Florida’s history. He was a beloved character who guided professionals who were just starting in their careers how to systematically discover at sites. He had an eye for items and a willingness to wade, dive and sometimes dig in unsuspecting locations.Ben was known as the “Father of Underwater Archeology and Paleontology”, but he was also a Navy Jet pilot, race car driver, judo instructor, herpetologist, Hollywood stuntman, Scuba diver legend, & fossil collector. He not only taught t Hugh Downs, Elvis Presley, and Lloyd Bridges how to scuba dive. Ben was Lloyd Bridges’ stunt double in the Sea Hunt television series. In 1983, Jim Dunbar and Ben Waller published a distribution map and interpretation of the paleo-Indian sites in Florida. (Just one of many publications that cite his findings. Ben Waller postulated that the Paleo‐Indians gathered around river‐crossings to ambush the large Pleistocene animals as they crossed the rivers (Waller 1970), implying periods of elevated water levels. Waller, Ben I.1970 Some Occurrences of Paleo‐Indian Projectile Points in Florida Waters. The Florida Anthropologist 23(4): 129‐134.https://original-ufdc.uflib.ufl.edu/UF00027829/00079/4j In the 1960s, Ben found the lost Spanish mission bell of the Ocklawaha. This article mentions the Waller estate sale. https://www.ocalastyle.com/the-lost-spanish-mission-bell-of-the-ocklawaha/ Ben is probably best known for one of his most popular fossil find (with Robert Allen), Titanis Walleri “the Terror Bird”. https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/florida-vertebrate-fossils/species/titanis-walleri/ If you have questions about a specific item, please ask questions.
