Ratified on August 18, 1920, this amendment granted American women the right to vote—a right known as women's suffrage. Art director Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland designed the stamp using work by artist Nancy Stahl. This stamp depicts early 20th century suffragettes marching, perhaps in front of the White House. The banner and the colors of purple, white, and gold are from the National Women's Party (NWP) which was instrumental in the fight for voting rights. A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp number is 5523.
