Description: The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States Prepared Through the Cooperation of the Commissioner of Fisheries of the 10th Census, by George Brown Goode, Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian. Washington, Government Printing Office, 1887. Small folio, 555 pages, 49 maps and 23 plates. This is the most valuable of all the Fisheries reports the Smithsonian did, because it not only looks into what the maps of the fishing grounds throughout the United States looked at in 1887, but it also provides a very forward-looking series of 17 charts of ocean temperatures taken in the North Atlantic for a period of years. The final section, the Fisherman of the United States, is a fascinating biographical look into what types of fishermen populated various areas, from the Indigenous Peoples of the Pacific Northwest to the Portuguese of New Bedford, Massachusetts, with numerous plates full page engravings, etc. A fantastic volume, the other ones did not have the maps charts and Engravings of fishermen this one does. Excellent condition. Maps are robust, no brittle pages, quite nice
