Description: One page, 8 x 9 ½, manuscript document, May 16, 1775, in which the children of Mary (Huntington) Carew promise to compensate BENJAMIN HUNTINGTON JR. of Norwich, CT, for his expenses for the caretaking of their mother who was living with Huntington. Huntington (1736-1800) was likely related to Carew. Huntington served as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, the Committee of Safety in the State House and was appointed to advise Gov. Jonathan Trumbull. In 1778, he was appointed a delegate to the Provincial Congress at New Haven. He also served in the Continental Congress. When the government went into operation in 1789, he was chosen to represent Connecticut in the First Congress of the United States. When Norwich was incorporated in 1784, he was elected as its first mayor. The document reads: “Know all men by these presents that witness our Hon. Mother Mrs. Mary Carew is now living and dwelling with Benjamin Huntington Jr...We Simeon Carew, Joseph Carew, Ebenezer Carew & Daniel Carew do hereby bind our selves & our heirs jointly and severally in consideration of his the said Huntington taking care of and providing for our said Mother so long as he...shall find it convenient to pay and refund unto...yearly...all the just and reasonable expenses that he shall be at in supporting and providing for our said Mother...” The document is signed by Simeon, Joseph, Ebenezer, Daniel and Eunice Carew and Bela Chaveland.
