David Ben Ami Synopsis:After the end of WWII, Ari (Paul Newman), a member of Haganah (Jewish paramilitary), fights to set up a homeland for the Jewish people. Ari comes to Cyprus to get as many ex-European Jews out of Cyprus displaced persons camps, controlled by the British, into Palestine. On Cyprus, Ari meets a recently widowed American nurse Kitty (Eva Marie Saint), who decided to volunteer in the displaced persons camp. At the camp, Kitty meets Karen (Jill Haworth), Jewish girl, saved by a Danish family from Holocaust. Kitty wants to take Karen to America with her, but Karen wants to go to Palestine to search for her father, who she believes survived Nazi concentration camp. In hopes of forcing the United Nations hand in setting up a Jewish State in Palestine, Ari arranges for the ship to take over 600 Jews to Palestine, including Karen. After the ship is blockaded by the British navy in Cyprus, Jews on board the ship, renamed Exodus, go on a hunger strike and are eventually allowed to go to Palestine. Kitty gets on board, as a nurse, during the blockade and continues to Palestine with Karen and Ari. In Palestine, Karen goes to live at a kibbutz (Gan Dafna), which is near the Jewish village where Ari grew up. Kitty and Ari help Karen in search of her father. On May 14th, 1948, the State of Israel is established and British mandate ends by the UN Partition Plan for Palestine. Shortly after, neighboring Arab armies invade Israel and Gan Dafna as well as nearby Jewish villages are the first ones to be attacked. Following World War II, the life of the Jewish nation is uncertain. The United Nations is contemplating taking a vote on creating a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Until then, many Jews are exiled from much of Europe - especially Germany - and as they have nowhere to go, they are sent to detention camps among other places Cypress. Ari Ben Canaan, a Palestinian Jew, wants to smuggle as many Jews as possible into Palestine. In his mind, the easiest way to influence the United Nations vote is by sheer numbers residing in Palestine. Ari commandeers a ship with 600 Jews, and after some obstacles, manages to make it to Palestine. Ari grew up in a mixed Arab/Jewish community in Palestine. His best childhood friend, Taha, is Arab and is now leader of the Arab section of the community. Regardless of the United Nations vote, the road to Ari's dream of a peaceful Jewish homeland in Palestine will be a difficult one because despite his own model community, extremist factions, both on the Jewish side and the anti-Zionist side, will never see living together in peace and advocate violence to achieve their own ends. Within this fray is widowed American nurse, Kitty Fremont. Kitty is initially naive about the conflict and hostile toward Ari's means of achieving his goals. However, she ultimately falls in love with him and with his dream despite their religious and cultural differences. Produced and directed by Otto Preminger, Exodus is a screen adaptation of the best-selling novel by Leon Uris. The film is concerned with the emergence of Israel as an independent nation in 1947. Its first half focuses on the efforts of 611 holocaust survivors to defy the blockade of the occupying British government and sail to Palestine on the sea vessel Exodus. Paul Newman, a leader of the Hagannah (the Jewish underground), is willing to sacrifice his own life and the lives of the refugees rather than be turned back to war-ravaged Europe, but the British finally relent and allow the Exodus safe passage. Once this victory is assured, 30,000 more Jews, previously interned by the British, flood into the Holy Land.
