He joined Orson Welles" Mercury Theatre and acted in his films in roles such as Bernstein in Citizen Kane (1941), Arthur Bannister in The Lady From Shanghai (1947) and a hired assassin in Prince of Foxes (1949). His prolific television presence included episodes of Bonanza (1960-65) and Gunsmoke (1963-65). At age 55, Sloane committed suicide, reportedly depressed over oncoming blindness by glaucoma.
